JANUARY MEETING

DUES FOR 2012 ARE DUE NOW

*************************************************************************

From the President’s Corner

LOOKING BACK

Wow! What a year of woodcarving we have just completed under the excellent leadership of Doug McKittrick:  a Tool sale,  a Wood sale with a vendor from Wisconsin, Demos at the Southeastern Woodworking Show and at the Center for the Arts in Lilburn. Members attending workshops in Lebanon, TN, Crossville, TN, and Prattville, AL, and the Carving Round-up in Florida as well as another one in Michigan, monthly meetings with carving projects in relief and in the round.  A guest instructor came from TN to teach us techniques in carving ‘hair on a bear” along with a vendor who brought carving supplies for sale.  Another highlight of the year was members  exhibiting at the GA National Fair in Perry and seven members spending two days there doing carving demos as “Artists in Residence”.  Congratulations AWC members for finding something in the above to participate in using your carving skills.

LOOKING AHEAD

The following are some of the things that will be happening which have been planned by the AWC Advisory Board which consist of our officers: Laveta Hilton, president, Tom Gorman, Vice President, Ellen Clymer, secretary, Gaines Burnette, treasurer, and club members, Ginny Gray, Dave Crum, and Doug McKittrick.

2012 SCHEDULE (so far)

January 10  First: Ginny Gray will lead the carving session in Reviewing the Basics with a look at various tools that are helpful.  BRING YOUR TOOLS. WOOD WILL BE SUPPLIED.

Second: We will discuss a NEW item for this year which is INTEREST GROUPS.  Late last year one of our members said  “I want to carve a dragon”  Others chimed in and expressed similar interest which is what led to give this a try.  Maybe or maybe not you want to carve a dragon.   I heard others express interest in Canes and Walking sticks, others Birds or Water Fowl, Animals, Caricatures, Relief, Chip, People, etc.  Please give it some thought as to what your special interest is for when you come Tuesday the 10th we will form Interest Groups. Persons in each group will help select their leader, discuss particular interest in the subject, where to get wood and supply blanks, share patterns and ideas, can carve at home or in groups,  share phone numbers and emails.  The facility where we have our monthly meetings at Mason Mill will be open each month at 6:30 on our regular meeting nights for your group to get together. To belong to a group is voluntary. Our regular meeting will start at 7 PM.  So come on Tuesday night with your ideas and questions.

February 14 Interest groups meet and carve:  the whole evening will be devoted to Interest Groups getting an active start in carving

their interest.  If others chose not to be in an Interest group, bring what you are working on or use the time to catch up on  unfinished project of another meeting.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1.  LOCAL WORKSHOP OPPORTUNITY in  APRIL

Allan Goodman from TN will be coming for 3 days in April to teach carving of one of three choices: an Indian, a Mountain Man, or Civil War Soldier.  Check out his web site at carvingvideos.com/allangoodman.aspx.  We  will need to decide on one of three of these dates:  April  (Friday 13th, 14& 15), (Friday 20th, 21 &22) and (Friday 27,28& 29).  Cost will be $125 for the three days.  The workshop will be at the Masonic Lodge on Lavista Rd.

2.     DOG WOOD PINS - A Fine of 25c will be collected by the Pin Sherriff from all who fail to wear their name tag pin.  This money goes for cards to ill members or other sunshine activities. Blanks with instructions are available to new members when they pay their dues. These should be finished within 4 months of receiving the blank.   New members of last year will have one more month of grace before a fine is collected.

3.     SHOW AND TELL of carvings to the general membership will be the first month of each quarter, thus starting in January.  The advisory board wanted to give more time to actual carving thus not doing this every month.

4.     A basic knife and glove will be available to borrow for drop-ins and newcomers.

5.     Carving at Tucker Recreation Center on 4898 Lavista Rd. will continue to be available to AWC on Thursdays.  Bring what you are working on or what you need help with.  There will be others there to give advice or answer questions.  Interest Groups may find this a good place to meet.  If you are new to attending there, call Doug McKittrick at 404 325 7355 or Laveta Hilton  404 296 4995 to be sure other carvers will be there.

6.   DUES for 2012 of $15 are now due.  Payment by check is preferred as it reduces the time needed to make change. Cash is always acceptable. If possible try to see the treasurer between 6:45 and 7 before the meeting starts so that our treasurer may participate in all carving activities.
