Atlanta Woodcarvers Holiday Party

Our Club Meeting for December will be our Annual Woodcarvers Holiday Party. We will meet in our regular classroom on Tuesday night, December 12th from 6:15 until 8:15 pm. Club members will sign up for food (dishes) to bring, paper goods, ice and drinks at the November Meeting. Also we would like to know if you will be bringing a guest. There will be a table to display woodcarvings-members are asked to bring 2-3 items which are your most recent (or seasonal) work. Please mark your calendars and plan to come-it is always an enjoyable evening!

AWC Summer 2018
Class with Janet Cordell
Our AWC Planning Committee have proposed a workshop with woodcarving teacher, Janet Cordell.

Janet was selected as Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine -Woodcarver for 2017
She is from Arkansas and members of her family have been carving for Silver Dollar City in Branson, MI since the 1960s. She is an extremely talented carver and very generous in
sharing her carving techniques. She carves horses, cowboys, wildlife and wonderful human faces.

Here are the facts of the class that we know at this time:
-She will be available to come between the end of June and sometime in August 2018.
-Class will be minimum of 10 students with a maximum of 12-13 students.
-A Three Day Class will cost $225 plus the cost of the rough out. (This includes her airfare)
-The club will need a $100 deposit toward the cost of the class. It will not be refundable if you decide not to take the class. (This will be discussed in more detail at our club meeting)
More Info:Contact me at gailholland@bellsouth.net

November Program
The program will be the completion of the carved hand mirrors that were began with Bob
Schrepfer at the October Club Meeting. This will be an opportunity with Bob on how best to inset your mirror. Looking forward to seeing each of the designs that were carved on different types of wood!
(If you have completed your mirror, you may want to bring something else to carve on.)

**In addition to our mirrors please bring a decoration idea that you can exchange with other members. We will not carve them at the meeting, but will exchange ideas.

Tip of the Month
Wood is usually sold by the board foot. A board foot is one foot wide by one foot long by one inch thick. To determine the board feet in a piece of wood multiply the length times the width. Multiply that by the thickness. Divide the result by 144 (the number of square inches in a square foot.)
That gives you the number of board feet in the piece of wood.

Happy Fall Y’all
I hope this newsletter finds all our members in good health and spirits. I am writing just prior to leaving for the Ga. National Fair and am looking forward to seeing the carvings there. Here’s hoping we do well as a Club. I have confidence we will.

Nominating Committee:
We will look forward to the report from our nominating committee for the nominations for the officers for next year. We will have the election in November and will accept nominations from the floor then.

Program for October:
This meeting our program will “mirror” our last month’s plan. Bob Schrepfer will present his program on mirrors and how to carve them. Remember the cost of the prepared blanks is $25, so be sure to bring your wallet. You will need your carving tools and your bench hook if you have one. For those who have not been in a previous class that Bob has taught, you are in for a treat. Bob does a lot of work to prepare the mirror blanks and they could almost be used as they are. If you do not wish to carve a mirror you can put one of Bob’s patterns on a 1” board of your choice which you will need to bring.

Upcoming Event -Highland Games will be held at Stone Mountain Park on October 20 – 22nd

A Note From Nelson
Can you believe the speed with which this year has progressed? It seems as if the sun has
disappeared more than usual this year, or did I just imagine that. Labor Day is behind us and we can look forward to cooler weather and colorful leaves.

We will meet Tuesday unless we have unanticipated repercussions from our lady of the hour — Irma. I will be in touch with the new manager of the Tucker Recreation Center on Monday to confirm our meeting time. Right now our meeting time will be 6:15 to 8:15. I will update this on Monday if a change is needed.
Entries for Ga. National Fair, Perry, Ga. Dates Oct. 5-15 2017
I need to remind everyone to bring your fair entries to the meeting. Have them boxed, one copy of the entry form inside the box, and one taped to the outside. Have an extra form to give to Doug to keep. We will collect the entries at the meeting and transport them to the fair for judging.
AWC Program for September
Mirror mirror not on a wall. This meeting will be devoted to carving a hand mirror.
Club Member, Bob Schrepfer will teach the class. He has ten varieties of wood to choose from for your blank and will have a variety of patterns to choose from. The cost of the blanks will be $25. Bring your carving tools and your Bench hook if you have one.

Woodcarvers-I bet we can all agree on this:
“The worst invention for a shop is a flat surface where messes can collect.” —Author unknown

Georgia National Fair
Remember, the Georgia National Fair in Perry is fast approaching. It is time to put the finishing touches on your carvings and fill out your entry forms. Doug has a lot more information for us concerning dates, times, and who is scheduled to represent the club at our artist in residence booth this year.

Ideas From Members
We will be asking for your input at this meeting. What we need is your ideas.
1: For meeting subjects — we will pass out note cards on which we want you to list three topics that you would like to have as subjects for future meetings. If you cannot attend this meeting please send us your suggestions in the form of a email to Gail , me, or Doug.
2: For outside instructors/class ideas — This can be either a class type or a suggestion for an instructor for the club. You can also pass on information about classes about which you have heard. Example: Mary May is going to teach at Highland woodworking on October 7 & 8.

Program
The program for this meeting is: Chip carving. We all use this type of cut so we need to be sure we do it correctly. Ginny has consented to teach the class for this month. We will have some practice wood to carve, but if you have a blank you want to carve on you can bring it. Bring a straight edge, pencil, and a chip carving knife for the class. If you do not have a chip carving knife bring a small knife or your favorite knife. Make sure it is as sharp as you can get it.

Tip of the Month:
Glue– Use Vaseline to keep the tip of your super glue clear. A small amount placed on the tip of the applicator will keep the glue from clogging the port. You just wipe it off before your next use. Be careful when you wipe off the tip. I suggest you use a paper towel or piece of cloth you will dispose of afterwards. You do not want to glue your fingertips together (again for some of us).

Next Club Meeting: Tuesday, June 13th 2017

Summer starts this month, (on the 21st this year.). Here in the south we can look forward to heat, humidity, and thunderstorms. Each of those can make carving unpleasant if we have to contend with them while carving. Fortunately we can usually remove ourselves from the effects of those conditions and can continue to carve on our projects in the comfort of our homes or you can join us on Thursday at the Tucker Recreation Center!!!

Tip of the month:

If you are using boiled linseed oil, turpentine, or other potentially hazardous materials you should plan ahead. You need to plan not only to have brushes and rags on hand, but also plan for clean up of your brushes and disposal of the rags you use to apply the substances or clean them up.

One method Laura Irish recommends to dispose of those rags is to get an empty coffee container and fill it halfway with water. You can submerge your used rags in the container until you can dry them out and dispose of them permanently.

The following is a quote from Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine after several fires were reported to them. “If you use any oil finishes, take care of your rags properly. Some folks store them in a bucket of water and a grease-cutting dish soap until it’s time to throw them away. Other people flatten the rags and let them dry thoroughly or hang them to dry. This is safe because the rags are spread out so the heat dissipates. Other people put the rags in a fire- proof container or take them outside to a burn barrel immediately after use. Take care of your rags properly.

Upcoming events:

SE Woodcarving School and Competition.

If you are planning to go to this school your time is running out. The dates for the school are July 7th -9th, 2017 in Wetumpka, Ala.

Party Time — AWC Summer Social:

Date: Regular Club Meeting on Tuesday July11th 2017

Our summer ice cream social is fast approaching. We need to make a list of what each of us will bring to the social and how many guest we can anticipate. The sign up sheet will be passed around at the June club Meeting. We will need ice cream, toppings, cookies, plasticware etc.
Be thinking about what you would like to bring.
***Please bring your recent carvings for Show and Tell at the social.

Program for July

Painting your dragonfly which you began carving at the June Meeting. Bring the basic colors of acrylic paint you will need. Also bring your favorite paint brush or a round #5 paint brush is recommended.

Nelson will bring paint to use to make the wings shimmer. We will also have other ideas to complete your projects. This is painting so wear appropriate clothing.

Next Meeting: Date- Tuesday, May 9th 2017 Time: 6:30-8:30p
Tucker Recreation Center, 4898 Lavista Rd. Tucker, Ga. 30084

Memorial Day:

May is the month with which I always associate the beginning of summer. It is also the month during which we remember those who served during the various wars and did not return. The emotions both of those cause gives rise to conflicted feelings at this time of year.

Sometimes we get conflicted feelings about our carvings. As with most things, I believe it is better to dwell on the positive and not the negative. We can always learn from even the worst of our carving experiences.

Leah Goddard Class:

We will look forward to a report from those who were able to take Leah’s class. She always has great information that she passes to her students.

Tip of the month:

Your gouge is hard — don’t be afraid to use it.

Keep in mind that if you use it to scrape rather than cut wood you will need to hone the cutting surface more frequently than usual.

Upcoming Events:

SE Woodcarving School and Competition.

If you are planning to go to this school your time is running out. The dates for the school are July 7th-9th, 2017.

Summer Social:

Our summer ice cream Social on Tuesday, July 11th is fast approaching. One more meeting after this one and it will be here.

Program for May Club Meeting

Carve a Dragonfly:

The program for this month will be part one of carving and painting a dragonfly. The article from which the lesson will be taken is originally from Carving Magazine.

Donna Menke is the author of the article.

Tools needed are:

Bench knife
#9 or #11 gouge 1/8″(3mm)
#3 gouge 3/4″ or as wide as you may have
Glove and finger guard

We will have wood to carve a dragonfly pin. If you would like to carve a larger version of the dragonfly or if you would like to relief carve a dragonfly on a box or on a square of wood you will need to bring the wood or box on which you will carve.

If you have a green stick from your yard trimmings about 1/4″ thick and about four inches long you can bring that for the body of your dragonfly that way you can tell anyone who asks that you “found” the dragonfly in your yard.

See you at the meeting,

Nelson

POW Recognition Day
Bataan Fell on April 9. That is why April 9 is POW recognition day. There is a saying that
POWs never have a good day. The former POWs I have known almost universally never have a bad one.

I think Woodcarvers are a little like the former POWs in that we never have a “bad” carving. Even the carvings on which we may make errors are not bad because we can always learn from our mistakes.

Southeastern Woodworking Show
Location: Cobb Galleria Date: March 31-April 2, 2017

When we meet this month we will have been to the Woodworking Show. We will want a report from those who attended.

Leah Goddard Class

Do not forget Carmen has volunteered her house for Leah’s class on April 24,25,26,and 27th. Two reminders about that class: First, you need to bring your check for the class if you have not paid already. Second, if you are still thinking about taking the class you may still be able to attend. Check with Carmen at the meeting to see if there are still openings.

Tip of the month:

Know what your tools will do.

What that tip means is to me is know what arc each of your gouges can cut. Remember each gouge other than a flat or number one gouge will cut a full circle. A larger gouge will not necessarily cut a larger circle. Two gouges of the same width will not make the same size circle if they have different sweeps.

It is advisable to take a practice board and see what size arc each of your gouges will make so you can choose the correct one for the pattern you are copying.

Look out Leprechauns!
March madness has arrived and we are getting our schedules filled for the year.

Club Business

Dues:
Most of us have paid our dues for the year, but if you have not be sure to bring your check or cash $20.00 for the year. (No late fees yet)

Wood:

Jim Hart will not be here Tuesday. We may be able to take orders for wood and have them delivered in October. We will talk more about this at the meeting.

Southeastern Woodworking Show:

The Atlanta Woodcarvers Club is going to need some help from its members this month. We have committed to staff a booth at the Southeastern Woodworking Show. This year it will be held at the Cobb Galleria from March 31 through April 2. Please think about when you can represent us at the show. We will have a sign-up sheet at the meeting Tuesday night.

Leah Goddard Class:

We also have the opportunity to take a class from Leah Goddard in April. Carmen has graciously offered her house as the location for the class but we will need ten students to have the class. We will discuss this and take checks to hold spots in the class at this meeting also.

Dates: 4 day Class April 24=27 (M-Th) Cost $175 + roughout
3 day Class April 25-27 (Tu-Th) Cost $ 140 + roughout

Tip of the Month:

Make room for your tools. ( I am not referring to space on your carving table or in your tool carrier.)

If you take a book and place the binding on a table with the pages up and try to stick a butter knife between the pages you would have trouble unless you first open the pages slightly. You need to do something similar to a piece of wood that you plan to carve. Do not force a knife or gouge into your piece of wood without planning what will happen. You might have run into problems with the heart pendant from January if you tried to force your knife into the wood instead of slicing it. That happens in many situations and is easy to overlook if you get in a hurry.

March Program:

Spoon carving:
This month Gaines will teach spoon carving. Bring your gloves and spoon carving tools.

The Super Bowl is over and for the Atlanta fans it feels like a woodcarver who just ruined a masterpiece with the last blow of the mallet. Now we will just have to move on to another project.

Woodcarving School

Speaking of another project, the 32nd Southeastern Woodcarving School and Competition is scheduled for July 7-9, 2017, in beautiful downtown Wetumpka, Alabama. If you wish to attend the class application and other information is available online at: www.centralwoodcarving.com Contact: jmbrooks1852@hotmail.com

Woodworking Show

The Southeastern Woodworking Show is also coming up soon. It appears that it will be at the Cobb Galleria this year the end of March. (We will have to confirm the dates.) Please think about when you can participate.

AWC Library

(Located in the Chippers Room at Tucker Rec. Center)

If you have not seen our club library be sure to check it out. It contains a wealth of carving knowledge. There are also some tools available if you need to borrow them. We need to keep up with who has borrowed which book or magazine so we ask that you sign out any article you want to take home. It is still on the honor system, but the sign out sheet will serve as a reminder to me and others of what needs to be returned.

Dues– Just a reminder, 2017 dues ($20) are payable for those who may have forgotten.

February AWC Program- Carving Wooden Whistles
Next Meeting: Date- February 14th 2017 Time: 6:30-8:30pm
Tucker Recreation Center, 4898 Lavista Rd. Tucker, Ga. 30084

The program for February will be carving whistles with our own valentine, Tim. He says you will only need your knife for this project, but I think he will agree that you need a glove and thumb guard too.

Ga. National Fair-Fall 2017
Perry, Ga.
This is just a reminder that we will participate in the Georgia National Fair again this year. It is not too early to think about what projects you want to enter.

Tip of the Month:

You can use the plastic bags that newspapers come in to protect your hands when you paint or stain your carvings. You can split the upper end of the bag if you need to to get it over your wrist. (A plastic grocery bag or sandwich bag can work as a disposable glove too.)

Program Schedule for 2017

April 11, 2017- Dragon Staple Remover- Theon

May 9, 2017- Dragon Fly

Happy New Year!!

Tuesday, January 10, 2017 will be our first meeting of this year. We will meet at our usual time and place 6:30-8:30 pm at the Tucker Recreation Center.

Be sure to wear your name tag and bring the items you have been working on for Show and Tell.

We will be asking for carving questions from the club and for hints to help us become better carvers. Being the first meeting of the new year, it is time to collect dues. This year our Advisory Council decided the dues are $20.00. Please bring a check for that amount payable to the Atlanta Woodcarvers Club.

To plan programs for this year I need to know what subjects we want for our meetings. In the past interest groups were established to work on related projects. Each member decided which group they wanted to work in and what specific project they wanted to complete pertaining to that group. As I remember we had Dragon,Fairy and Cane Groups. If we want to do that again, we need to decide what projects we want to have for the groups.

If you know of a program you will be willing to lead, please let me know. I have some ideas for programs but need instructors.

Bring your knife and a V-tool for the program this month. We will make a cascading ribbon heart based on the instructions in Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine-Spring 2012.
