MAY MEETING
From the Presidents Corner May 2013
Last month we finished carving the Shelf Sitter Raccoon (Well, some of you did). Laveta
Hilton taught the first lesson focused on wood burning OR carving the hair, applying paint,
and pin head eyes. It was a fun project and we owe Laveta a huge “Thank you” for
bringing us the idea. For Show and Tell, remember to bring your raccoons and anything
else you’ve been working on.
This month we will start a new project – carving a cigar box. Some of you picked up a box
last month, so if you did, be sure to remember to bring it, sanded down, ready to carve.
For those who signed up for one of the two sample boxes, I have them sanded and ready to
go. If you weren’t at last month’s meeting, don’t worry, I’ll have a few extra boxes
available. The first box is free. If there are any sanded ones not used at the meeting, they
will be $5.00 each. I will also have a supply of un-sanded boxes available for $3.00. I will
bring carbon paper and the patterns from last time, but you are welcome to bring and use
your own pattern or just come up with one out of your head. The finished boxes make
great music boxes and I will demonstrate how to install the music works, if you chose to do
so.
For new carvers, if you don’t have tools, don’t worry about it, the club will have some tools
available and/or you can borrow from some of us older members. Remember a PENCIL is
an important tool in your tool box. So bring the tools you have.
The club is sponsoring a class with Gene Webb http://www.genewebbcarvings.com/ ,one of
the carvers from Townsend, TN. He does some beautiful work and will be teaching a class
on carving either an Indian Head or a wood spirit (your choice). Gene will provide the
blanks and hands on instructions. Gaines has been kind enough to offer the use of his
basement for the class. The class will be Saturday and Sunday, August 10 & 11 from 9:00
AM until 5:00 PM. The cost is $150.00 per person. We need to have at least 10 people in
order to have the class. I’ll get a head count at the meeting to see if we have enough, or you
can just email me if you want to attend, but you’re not going to make this moth’s meeting.
As always, we’re still looking for ideas and suggestions of the rest of the year, so let us know
if there is a particular topic you would like to cover or if you would like to volunteer to lead
a session.
A group averaging 10-12 people meets on Thursdays at Tucker Rec, Room 1, 4898 Lavista
Rd. for Open Carving. Come and go anytime between 10:30 AM and 3 PM for good
carving and fellowship.
Don’t forget to bring whatever you’ve been working on for Show and Tell and I look
forward to seeing you there.
