JUNE MEETING
From the Presidents Corner June 2013
Last month we started a new project – carving a cigar box. Some of us carved the box and then
installed music works to make a music box; others either just carved or burned the box. Either way,
it was a good project and I’m sure some of us will be visiting cigar stores in the future to look for
additional boxes. Be sure to bring your boxes for show and tell.
This month, our esteemed VP will be showing us how to carve a a traditional Dalecarlian horse.
Don’t ask me how to pronounce it, I can just barely spell it. What it is, is a 6” by 6” horsed carved in
the Scandinavian style of flat-plane carving. Jerry is furnishing the blanks and will tell us all about
the horse, how it’s painted and other relevant details about this particular style of carving. Sound
like fun!
For new carvers, if you don’t have tools, don’t worry about it, the club will have some tools available
and/or you can borrow from some of us older members. Remember a PENCIL is an important tool
in your tool box. So bring the tools you have.
The woodcarving show and school in Prattville, AL is coming up in July. Jerry will give us more
information at the meeting, but in the meantime you can check the website,
www.centralalwoodcarving.com for details.
The club is sponsoring a class with Gene Webb www.genewebbcarvings.com, one of the carvers from
Townsend, TN. He does some beautiful work and will be teaching a class on carving either an Indian
Head or a wood spirit (your choice). Gene will provide the blanks and hands on instructions.
Gaines has been kind enough to offer the use of his basement for the class. The class will be
Saturday and Sunday, August 10 & 11 from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. The cost is $150.00 per person.
We need to have at least 10 people in order to have the class. I’ll get a head count at the meeting to
see if we have enough, or you can just email me if you want to attend, but you’re not going to make
this moth’s meeting.
SPECIAL NOTICE: Beginning with June meeting and continuing until they are all gone, I will be
bringing wood, blanks, eyes and other goodies given to the club by Jim Price, son of long time
member John Price who passed away. There is a ton of stuff, but don’t let this opportunity pass you
by. There is some REALLY neat stuff here.
Last month, we heard about a special exhibit at the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum, The Moses
Young Robinson Collection. You can see more at the web site www.HeritageSandySprings.org. It
has been suggested that the club donate $100.00 to the museum to help support the exhibit and
promote woodcarving. We will take a vote at the meeting to decide. Please be in thought and check
out the web site so you can participate.
HEADS UP: Next month’s meeting, July 9th, will be the ice cream social. We’ll need volunteers for
ice cream, cookies, drinks, cups and ice so we’ll be passing around a sigh-up sheet. Plan on coming
and bring spouses for a good time of fellowship and eating.
As always, we’re still looking for ideas and suggestions of the rest of the year, so let us know if there
is a particular topic you would like to cover or if you would like to volunteer to lead a session.
Attendance at the Thursday Carves Group at Tucker Rec, Room 1, 4898 Lavista Rd., was great for
the month of May. Usually 10 to 12 folks get together for for Open Carving. Come and go anytime
between 10:30 AM and 3 PM for good carving and fellowship. It’s particularly nice if you don’t like
to drive at night.
Don’t forget to bring whatever you’ve been working on for Show and Tell and I look forward to
seeing you there.
